i have had dogs since i was a small child always loved there loyalty and unquestioning love but it wasn't until i was much older i discovered how amazing the pit bull group of breeds can be. Yes they were bred to fight but some of the qualities that were bred into them were strength loyalty and a deep love of their master.  With these dogs just like anything in life you get what you put out they are very sensitive animals if they are nurtured and treated with love you will wind up with a loyal loving pet. they are extremely smart animals and have been bred to love humans . when raised properly they are great with children and were actually used as nanny dogs in turn of the century America. they are a strong agile animal and just like any other animal must be trained and supervised but with some discipline and love you will be rewarded tenfold for your efforts.  they are also very trainable dogs and were considered America's dog for years they only recently gained their bad reputation and i think it is tied to being the "popular" dog among people who are irresponsible and those who want dogs for the wrong reason much like the Shepperd doberman and rottweiler went through i truly believe there are no bad dogs just bad owners. petey on lil rascals was an American stafordshire terrier also known as an amstaf which is one of the four breeds that fall into the group of dogs known as "pit bull". if you think about the show he was a family dog and that is probably what pits are best at. I was quite surprised several years ago when i decided to get a dog again and started doing research. Almost all the literature i could find stated how loyal and easily trainable these breeds are. there are many cases of them being used as seeing eye dogs or police dogs . i also learned during my research that they don't require as much space as other breeds and have almost no tendency to run away or wander. they are most concerned about being near their people.  most statistics i have found show that they have much less of a tendency to bite than other dogs even with their popularity with responsibly owners. they do need regular exercise but with a half hour of vigorous exercise a day they will be a very obedient loyal loving pet.  when i was done with my investigating i chose to get a pit bull for my pet and the next day i got my first pit a half breed i named molly
